Superyacht Gathering’s Pinnacle Event 2022

The 2022 edition of the Superyacht Gathering was the Pinnacle Event which took place from 23-25 November with a total of 66 guests – included 22 overseas attendees – who gathered in Auckland for three days of networking, inspirational talks, and a showcase of authentic Kiwi culture.

The Pinnacle Event kicked off with an immersion into New Zealand’s culture and customs at Homeland restaurant in Westhaven. The evening began with a Powhiri – a traditional Maori welcome ceremony. BURGESS CEO Jonathan Beckett reprised his role as the “Headman” from the inaugural event in 2019, picking up the fern thrown down as a challenge by the Maori Warrior, and maintaining eye-contact with the challenger as he picked it up, to signal that our presence was peaceful.

The second day was all about informing and inspiring the attendees. Talks were hosted by industry experts and legends, smoothly emceed by the Editor-In-Chief of BOAT International magazine, Stewart Campbell.

Presentations included Ron Holland’s introduction of his design protégé, naval architect Laura Fuge, while Isaac Burrough and Benetti’s Peter Mahony talked about the future of sustainable superyacht design. Jonathan Beckett talked about early life as a superyacht broker and what it takes to succeed in our industry. Captain Michael Gooding, Angela Pennefather, Stacey Cook, David Jamieson and Manoa Rey showcased the touristic lure and upcoming events in the South Pacific islands they call home, focusing on the importance of understanding a culture before dropping anchor in a new yachting destination. The symposium was wrapped up by NZ Geographic publisher James Frankham.

The Pinnacle Event closed on November 25th with miraculously good weather during site tours of local industry leading businesses Orams Marine and Southern Spars, followed by the infamous Long Lunch. Spectacular views of the waterfront were enjoyed from SAILS restaurant, with old friends and new acquaintances making memories over delicious food and free-flowing wine complimented by the sounds of live jazz played by the Nairobi Trio.

After years of lockdowns, it was a pleasure to bring the superyacht community together once again. Friends were made, stories were told, and the beauty and rich heritage of the South Pacific islands showcased in all their splendour. Most importantly, this event unleashed new inspiration and motivation for creating positive sea change in our industry.
