Indonesia’s Marine Tourism Strategies
The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism (MoT) is working to reform the local travel and tourism industry, outlining key strategies tol focus on attracting high-spending travellers and developing high-value tourism products, as reported in a TTG Asia article published March 7th. Rizki Handayani, MoT’s deputy for industry and investment, highlighted the government’s efforts to make tourism a priority sector at the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA) national conference. “We must provide products that resonate with high-value travellers,” she said, adding that the ministry is prioritising wellness, gastronomy, and marine tourism to cater to current travel trends.
In regards to marine tourism, MoT is driving the development of marinas and boating infrastructure to capitalise on the growing yachting industry across South-east Asia and Australia. “Indonesia is a prime destination for yachts, and improved facilities will stimulate related industries and attract more visitors,” she opined.
Attesting to new marina development is the scheduling of Indonesia’s first Full-Service Yacht Marina. PT Marina Development Indonesia and Pelindo have signed a contract announcing the ground breaking of Indonesia's first international-standard full-service marina. This milestone project represents a significant leap forward in the country's maritime tourism and infrastructure. The marina will be able to accommodate 180 wet berths, including more than 50 superyachts up to 90 meters in length.
It will have a modern yacht service area equipped with a travel lift capable of handling up to 200 tons and a high-quality fuelling station. The development is poised to deliver world-class facilities, further positioning Indonesia as a premier destination for maritime activities. Reporting on new marina developments, Captain Thomas Taatjes of Asia Pacific Superyachts Indonesia, enthuses, “We are all looking forward to a promising future for yachting and marine tourism in Indonesia.”
Further to the importance of the new marina, Ulf Backlund, President Director of Marina Development Indonesia, said: "Indonesia deserves a first-class marina that reflects its status as the new yachting paradise of the world. Indonesia's distinctive location, safely positioned outside hurricane and typhoon paths, combined with its 17,000 islands, spectacular diving locations, diverse languages, cultures, and favourable weather all year long, makes Indonesia the ideal location for such a development”, further commenting, “This marina will attract global yachting enthusiasts and open up for exploring Indonesia's natural beauty in the biggest archipelago in the world."
