Melanesia Luxury Yachts: The Importance of Giving
Each year, Melanesian Yacht Services dedicates 25% of our annual profits to giving back to the communities we are privileged to engage with. For us, this isn’t just an initiative; it’s a responsibility. The power of altruism cannot be overstated. Kindness matters—not for recognition, but for the greater good of humanity and our shared existence on this incredible blue planet.
For most of us, accessing clean drinking water is as simple as walking a few steps and turning on a tap. Yet for 26% of the world’s population—about 2 billion people—clean water remains a luxury. It can mean the difference between life and death. Access to safe drinking water impacts life expectancy, wealth, and social standing. It can even reshape populations, forcing entire communities to relocate.
In my work, I’ve witnessed communities where people—no, children—walk an hour each way just to reach a clean water source. With changing weather patterns, this challenge is only growing. Recently, I was introduced to an incredibly simple yet highly effective water filter by Gary Litz. I was reluctant to share this until I had personally tried and tested one of these filters myself. Today, having seen the results, I’m thrilled to announce that Melanesian Luxury Yachts has ordered our first 200 filters.
These filters, purchased through Madfox Pawa, will be distributed during our next expedition to West New Britain, Papua New Guinea, where we plan to deliver them to rural hospitals, schools, and families. I couldn’t be more excited. Each filter costs just $87 AUD (PGK175) and lasts over five years. One filter alone can create a tangible, lasting impact in communities.
I have nothing but admiration, respect, and gratitude for people like Gary Litz, who champion simple yet life-changing solutions for their communities. I’m so proud to know you and eager to support.
Also this past year, we’ve been fortunate to partner with yacht clients and colleagues from @lindbladexp Expeditions, @seawomenofmelanesia and the @minderoofoundation Foundation, continuing to create impact—no matter how small it might seem. Because, as Paul Kelly sings, “From little things, big things grow.”
One of our favourite organisations to support is @daysforgirlsaustralia. I cannot stress enough the profound impact one of their kits has on the rural communities we work with. If you don’t know who they are—find out. This isn’t just about menstruation; it’s about education, cost savings for poor families, and empowering individuals to take ownership of their own bodies.
For the second year in a row, today I attended my local Mareeba Days for Girls International Christmas morning tea. It’s a privilege to meet the incredible organisers, sewers, and packers who dedicate the first Saturday of every month to donate their time making these kits for women they will likely never meet. Their work is making a profound impact on the lives of women, reshaping societies one kit at a time.
Recently, @a_smithson and the team at @coralseamarina embraced this initiative and have continued to expose our yachts to Days for Girls International Girls in Airlie Beach. How amazing is that?
Their dedication to amplifying this mission is helping us extend the ripple effect of kindness and change even further. If we can all do the same—just imagine the outcome. The power of collective kindness and action is unstoppable. Let’s continue to inspire change, one small act at a time.
