Chairman’s Message January 2021

This is APSA’s 10 th anniversary and in the last 10 years we have seen a huge upswing in the business of yachting in Asia fueled by many yachts visiting from the West and a large swell of domestic demand. Due to us being unable to have a big birthday party, we decided to start the year with a series of webinars to highlight the Asia-Pacific region, and let people from all around the world understand this cruising circuit over here.

Simpson Marine a Market Leader in Asia in 2020

Simpson Marine, Asia’s leading yacht sales and services company, reports a very busy year in 2020 with sales of over 200 million USD and 112 new and pre-owned yachts sold in 2020. Founded in 1984 by Mike Simpson, over the years Simpson Marine has gone from strength to strength, cementing its position as market leader in Asia. Despite 2020 being a turbulent and challenging year for many businesses, boating became a safe haven to turn to when people’s usually busy lives and diverse leisure agendas have been suspended and altered. With international travel seriously restricted or unavailable in some parts of the world, including Asia, enjoying the local area by boat quickly grew in popularity.

Sri Lanka Opens Border for Tourists, Yachts Next?

Sri Lanka has opened its border for tourists, mainly for those arriving by air and booked into hotels in the travel bubble. Priyantha Perera, heading up Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) in Sri Lanka, believes the next consideration will be the opening up to cruising tourism. “We have written to the authorities requesting them to open up for cruising and hoping to see a positive response” says Perera. “The many regulations concerning tender boat operations and lack of anchorages suitable for superyachts has held back significant superyacht cruising, which now actually adds to its attraction as a stunning adventure cruising destination, once the borders are open to arriving yachts”.
