Stad Amsterdam: World Tour 2024- 2025

The Clipper Stad Amsterdam was recently in Hong Kong as part of its two-year voyage around the world, that started in Amsterdam 2023 and finishes back in Amsterdam in time to participate in Sail Amsterdam in August 2025. APSA was delighted to catch up with an old friend from the Dutch superyacht community, Evert Van Dishoeck who is the Director for Rederij Clipper Stad Amsterdam B.V. Stad Amsterdam, the official flagship of the city of Amsterdam, and an icon of the five-yearly nautical event SAIL Amsterdam.

APSA was pleased to be invited on board during the Hong Kong stopover, where over 2,500 visitors took up the option to visited this iconic clipper. Sponsored by Randstad, the ship is half way through its world tour and the next stop is Sydney, Australia where it will arrive early August. The Clipper then heads to Brisbane, before returning to Asia, with a stop over in Denpasar, Indonesia in September, Singapore in October, and Chennai and Mumbai in India in November, and then the ship head south via Maldives, Mauritius and Cape Town.

What makes this Clipper unique is that she is the best of two worlds. She is designed after the commercial tall ships of the late nineteenth century when maritime trade was at its peak but at the same time, she is fully equipped with state-of-the-art sustainable shippings systems of today. The 19th century style clipper ship is 76 metres in length and features 31 sails with a total area of 2200 square meters, but at the same time she is fully equipped with state-of-the-art sustainable shippings systems of today.

Sustainability is part of the Clipper’s DNA and life at sea means being very close to nature. On board there is a lot of respect for the environment and its preservation. As sailing enthusiasts, the ship strives to cover as many miles as possible under sail. The large-scale refit in 2019/2020 resulted in a major step being taken regarding the sustainable course of Clipper Stad Amsterdam. The ship now has much cleaner and more efficient engines for both propulsion and power supply. An exhaust gas treatment installation has been installed and the ship has been fitted with a new wastewater treatment installation to fulfil future requirements of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). In order not to have to switch on the generator in the port, thereby not having to burn unnecessary diesel, an improved shore power connection has been implemented.

Stad Amsterdam sails as a passenger ship under the Dutch flag and guests can sign up to sail on the various legs around the world. Surrounded by teak wood and brass, every last detail making guests feel as though they have travelled back in time, but without compromising on modern-day comforts. The ship has 14 cabins, a spacious dining room (The Longroom) for dinners and presentations and an outdoor bar with additional space to host a reception or dinner. Stad Amsterdam can be booked privately for luxury cruises and corporate events, where guest can stay onboard for luxury cruises or for a sailing adventure of a lifetime!
