The third episode of the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association’s (APSA) virtual cruise took place on 26 January, and saw the good ship m/y APSA sampling the delights and facilities of Phuket before moving down the Kra Peninsula to Singapore, and then crossing the world’s busiest shipping lane to the island chain that is Indonesia.

Founded in 1984 by Mike Simpson, over the years Simpson Marine has gone from strength to strength, cementing its position as market leader in Asia. Despite 2020 being a turbulent and challenging year for many businesses, boating became a safe haven to turn to when people’s usually busy lives and diverse leisure agendas have been suspended and altered. With international travel seriously restricted or unavailable in some parts of the world, including Asia, enjoying the local area by boat quickly grew in popularity.
Sri Lanka has opened its border for tourists, mainly for those arriving by air and booked into hotels in the travel bubble. Priyantha Perera, heading up Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) in Sri Lanka, believes the next consideration will be the opening up to cruising tourism. “We have written to the authorities requesting them to open up for cruising and hoping to see a positive response” says Perera. “The many regulations concerning tender boat operations and lack of anchorages suitable for superyachts has held back significant superyacht cruising, which now actually adds to its attraction as a stunning adventure cruising destination, once the borders are open to arriving yachts”.
Superyacht Australia, the peak body for the Australian Superyacht Industry, hosted the 2021 Superyacht Australia Soirée in partnership with Benetti Yachts at Jones Bay Marina in February, 2021. With international travel not permitted and foreign flagged cruise ships unable to operate, many families are considering chartering a yacht to cruise or celebrate important milestones. Fortunately, with the passing of the Special Recreational Vessel (SRV) Act in December 2019, international superyachts can also enter Australia and provide additional capacity into this booming market
