Papua New Guinea

Oceanic Pacific: world-class diving in the Bismarck Sea and Trobriand Islands

Overview

Papua New Guinea is the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, just 150 km north of Australia at the nearest point. It is mountainous in the centre, with lowland tropical forest along the north and south coasts, and a very convoluted geology in the east where three tectonic plates meet.

More than 1,000 cultural groups coexist in PNG, and there are officially 851 indigenous languages - diversity on the rampage. The coastal waters, and in particular the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago and the Trobriand Islands, offer some of the best diving in the world.

What PNG lacks in sophistication - five-star hotels and the like - is more than made up for on board a superyacht. The cruising season runs from May to October, depending on the region, with a monsoon from December to March.
