Cambodia

Southeast Asia: Angkor Wat, emerald waters and islands newly open to yachts

Overview

Sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, and held against the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia has a mere 443 km of coastline and has hardly appeared on the yachting map at all. Its biggest draw card is Angkor Wat, the Hindu temple complex that constitutes the largest religious monument in the world.

Phnom Penh, the capital, was considered the loveliest of the French-built cities in Indochina in the 1920s. Cambodia has only recently opened up to boating, but with its pristine beaches, emerald waters and unexplored islands it will no doubt attract more yachts in the future.

The cruising centres on the south coast around Sihanoukville and the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Pous, with the best season from October to April. A cruising permit is required.
