Mauritius

Indian Ocean: happily in the middle of nowhere, five-star beaches and diving

Overview

Mauritius is happily in the middle of nowhere. At 900 km from the nearest land, Madagascar, it is surrounded by water as clean as that which you cross to get to it. The white sand beaches are exemplary, and the diving is five-star and more.

Port Louis, the capital and only port of entry, has been welcoming foreigners into its harbour for a very long time. "Discovered" by the Portuguese in 1507, Mauritius was colonised by the Dutch, the French and then the British, before independence in 1968.

English, French and Creole influences combine to create a vigorously multicultural society. The trade-wind cruising season runs from April to November; cyclones can occur from November to April.
