Micronesia

Oceanic Pacific: 607 islands and the WWII ship graveyard of Truk Lagoon

Overview

The Federated States of Micronesia is a collection of 607 tiny islands and atolls strung along the Caroline Archipelago, to the east of the Philippines. There is very little tourism activity, on account of the remoteness and the lack of infrastructure.

In 1944, US carrier forces sank 12 Japanese warships and 32 merchant ships in Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon, making it the biggest ship graveyard in the world, and a delight for divers ever since.

The four states - Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae - each offer their own diving and culture. The best cruising is from May to October, with a tropical climate influenced by the northeast trade winds.
