Fema Marine’s Major Superyacht Refit Projects

Alfa Nero, Leona, and Moca attracted considerable attention when they arrived together at the Aganlar Shipyard in Bodrum, Turkey. The Fema Marine team has had a busy schedule with surveys, specialist refit project management, and equipment supply. Working across a range of shipyards and manufacturers, Fema Marine oversaw complex refit and repair programmes for two flagship projects: an extensive refit of the 72-metre Dunya superyacht Axioma, and the drydock maintenance programme of Alfa Nero.

Axioma: A Year-Long Refit at MB92 La Ciotat

In April 2024, Axioma arrived at MB92 La Ciotat for a year-long refit that was completed earlier this year. The programme was extensive, covering structural modifications, mechanical overhauls, and aesthetic upgrades. Works began with a full drydock period, during which hull plating, structural framing, and deck hardware were all addressed.

The stabilisation system underwent a complete overhaul, including the removal and servicing of all four Quantum fins and shafts — one fin shaft and its associated components were replaced with all-original parts. The bow thruster motor and electronics also received maintenance.

In the engine room, both CAT 3516C main engines and four C9 generators were dismantled to bare block and overhauled with Caterpillar OEM components. Generator silencers and spray nozzles were replaced. The freshwater piping and pump network were completely renewed, the AC and HVAC systems were overhauled by Heinen & Hopman, and all engine room pumps were replaced. Overboard valves were removed and tested, and the electrical distribution systems were extensively upgraded. All lighting was converted to LED, and the AV/IT and entertainment systems were fully updated. Water tanks were cleaned and all fresh water and ballast tanks were repainted.

Alfa Nero: Drydock at Martinique Shipyard

At the Martinique Shipyard, Fema Marine oversaw the drydock maintenance programme of Alfa Nero in close coordination with her builder, Oceanco. Originally delivered in 2007, the 2,500 GT superyacht features exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and interior by Alberto Pinto. She accommodates 12 guests across six staterooms, as well as 26 crew members including the captain.

The project began with antifouling removal through WA2 blasting, followed by the application of new coatings across the underwater hull, including the stabiliser pockets and sea chests. All sacrificial anodes were renewed, including those fitted to the shafts and propellers. Work on the propulsion and steering systems included the replacement of rudder shaft seals and a full inspection of the main engines and generators.

A structural survey carried out by List Design identified a number of defects, all of which were addressed during the yard period. The elevator window was replaced, teak decking was sanded and cleaned, and both the Jacuzzi and spa systems underwent maintenance. The pool system was comprehensively serviced, including the hydraulic lift, pumps, valves, and electronic controls. All anchor winches and windlasses were inspected and overhauled.

“Both projects reflect Fema Marine’s ability to manage the complexity of large yacht maintenance and the planning required to coordinate multiple systems, suppliers, and stakeholders. From full-system overhauls to OEM-supervised recommissioning, the company’s detail-driven approach to technical project management sets a consistent benchmark in the refit and drydock sector.”
